The Weerawila Farm was established in the year 1943 and was initially managed by the Department of Agriculture. During 1978 it was handed over to the Department of Animal production and Health. The farm was handed over to the NLDB consequently to a policy decision during 1992. At the time of taking over of this farm it was not making profits and was in a neglected state and the pasture fields were reverting back to jungle.After the takeover of this farm the buildings were repaired and unproductive cattle and buffaloes in the farm were disposed and a definite program was drawn up for the development of this farm.
New Goat sheds were constructed along with a poultry unit to produce eggs and broilers. Further, a cashew plantation was also commenced at Mahapallessa Division. Presently, the Farm has a broiler unit and an egg production program mainly to supply the local Market.
Climate is arid in nature and the mean temperature is 27ºC, Humidity is around 70% to 80% and the annual rainfall is around 1000mm to 2500mm with 40 to 100 wet days per annum. Soil type ID Reddish Brown Earth. Ph. of the soil varies from 5.5 to 7.
