Buffalo Breeds
Murrah
Origin
:
Murrah buffaloes originated in India, primarily in the states of Haryana and Punjab.
Characteristics
:
Murrah is one of the most popular dairy breeds of buffalo. They are known for their high milk production, producing between 2,000 to 3,000 liters per lactation period, with a high butterfat content of around 7–8%. Murrah buffaloes have a compact and heavy body with a shiny black coat, tightly curled horns, and a well-developed udder. They are highly adaptable and have been exported to other countries for dairy farming.
Nili Ravi
Origin
:
The Nili Ravi breed originated in the Punjab region of Pakistan and India.
Characteristics
:
Nili Ravi buffaloes are another prominent dairy breed, similar in performance to the Murrah. They are characterized by their large size, well-developed bodies, and distinct white markings on the forehead, muzzle, and lower legs, commonly referred to as "white points." Nili Ravi buffaloes have a high milk yield, often producing 2,000 to 3,000 liters per lactation, with a butterfat content of about 6–7%. Their adaptability to different climates and high resistance to diseases make them a valuable breed in dairy farming.
Surthi
Origin
:
The Surthi breed comes from the Gujarat state in India, particularly in the Surat and surrounding regions.
Characteristics
:
Surthi buffaloes are medium-sized dairy buffaloes, known for their milk production and efficient feed conversion. They have a distinct black or brown color with a wedge-shaped body and small, flat, and tightly curled horns. Surthi buffaloes produce moderate milk yields compared to Murrah and Nili Ravi, typically around 1,500 to 2,000 liters per lactation, with a butterfat content of about 6–8%. They are well adapted to the local climate and are relatively hardy, requiring less intensive care.
